To launch the drone and set up your shots, you just use your smartphone, or your Apple Watch. There are a few ways that the R1 can follow you. These flight modes are called Cinematic Skills (Follow, Lead, Orbit, Side, Tripod). Using follow will make the R1 follow you from behind. Lead will make the drone predict your direction and stay in front of you. Side stays to the side for panning shots. Tripod keeps the drone in one spot while looking at you like an automated tripod in the sky.

I've been flying drones for seven years now, and I still get a little nervous every time I fly. If you've invested more than $1,000 in your drone, you'd be crazy not to be a little nervous. One of the best ways to get over that is to practice with a cheap one—like my favorite toy drone from Symatoys. The X20 is sold in a variety of configurations and rebranded by several companies, but it's all the same basic hardware. Don't pay more than $40. Be careful flying indoors, as it can hurt when it hits you (ask me how I know that). It's a little different to fly compared to the bigger drones (if anything it's more difficult), but also a lot of fun.
It does include a camera, although not the greatest quality but still fun to play around with. This drone, like many others also has a headless feature, but also features an altitude hold function or hover which is something most of the less expensive drones do not have. This is especially useful when trying to learn how to hover. FPV is not possible with the small LCD display on the controller but it does give you some vital information about the drone during flight.

There’s a few different versions of the Hubsan X4. The cheapest version doesn’t have an agility mode like the Nano QX so you can’t fly with complete manual control, but it’s pretty fast and maneuverable (even with auto leveling). It also has 6 LED lights which can be turned on and off from the controller. Speaking of controllers, the controller that comes with the 3 cheaper Hubsan models is actually pretty nice. I like it better than what comes with the Nano QX and the Proto x).

The flight time and speed on the Mavic 2 is unmatched by anything but the Phantom 4 Pro. It is easy to fly the quad. You just hold it in front of you and double tap on the power button. The camera scans the surroundings and locks onto your face and then spins the propellers. The gesture control works remarkably well and all it needs is just some practice related to the gestures. The gestures are cool but limited to a few actions useful for taking a quick selfie or a video clip. For other actions, you can use the DJI app. There are different flight modes to select from and with ActiveTrack, it can be set to follow you or any other subject selected from the screen.
There are a total of eight obstacle avoidance cameras on the Mavic 2 and one IR sensor on the top for overhead obstacles. That means you’ll have a very hard time crashing this drone! Additionally, you can enable a flight mode called APAS where the mavic will go around obstacles as you fly instead of just stopping. APAS works while going forward and backward.
This is a little more expensive than some of the other drone kits on this list (at a still-quite-reasonable $150 USD) but it’s definitely one of the best DIY drones on the market in terms of complexity. Then after a couple of weeks I got an unexpected email from Holy Stone asking me if they could send me a new one. I said no, I'm just asking for a refund. I was then told, no, you don't understand, you already got your refund. We just want to replace your copter for you anyway. That's outstanding service. More than I deserve but extremely impressive. My first issue is the lack of documentation for the Standard model. I am able to locate documentation for the Advanced and Professional models but nothing for the Standard model. If it exists it's a well kept secret. I did read the users manual for the Advanced model but it has flight modes which are not present in the Standard model. Due to the lack of documentation I couldn't diagnosis a problem I appeared to be having with my aircraft. On a hunch I ended up exchanging it ... full review
All of this would be useless without good motor speed controllers, but thankfully all four 32-bit ESCs support ONESHOT 42. One great thing about ImmersionRC ESCs is the fact that you never have to worry about soldering the motor wires on backwards thanks to the rotorSENSE feature. With rotorSENSE, if one motor is spinning in the wrong direction, you just spin the motor by hand in the direction you want it to go and the ESC will then spin the motors in that direction.
The Armor 90 comes in two different models. There’s a DSM receiver version and a version with no receiver, so you can use whatever transmitter and receiver you want. I use the FrSky Taranis, so I would use my own receiver and it would plug right in. Again, since this is a true racer you will need to buy batteries and FPV goggles if you want to do FPV.
Unofficially, on my kitchen scale, this unit weighs in at about 1.5 pounds, without prop guards, compared to 4 to 5 ounces for the other two, making this a much more stable unit. The HS 100 has GPS capability added. This feature eliminates the issue of the drone drifting away in windy conditions and allows the drone to hold steady with regard to altitude and distance from the controller. This allows the pilot to concentrate more on taking photographs than on trying to control drone flight.
The Phantom 4 Pro is an excellent choice for aerial photographers that seek professional results. It features a 1-inch CMOS sensor and shoots 4K 60fps video, making it great for filmmaking and photography. It also features DJI’s FlightAutonomy system, providing you with five directions of obstacle sensing. This can come in handy when flying in tight spaces, which is sometimes required for filming and photography. If this feature isn’t hugely important to you, you can save some money and get a Phantom 4 Advanced, which comes with two directions of obstacle sensing. While this drone model is no longer in production, you can pick up a refurbished one!

The DJI Phantom series drones are some of the most capable and recognizable drones on the market. The Phantom 1 was a revolutionary aircraft that put DJI and prosumer drones on the map. The Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 has collectively built on the series success and continues to be used for photography, filmmaking, inspections, and various other applications.
Flying the Disco isn’t like flying other RC airplanes. If you want to go up, just push the stick up and it automatically adjusts the motor speed and wing pitch to go up at a steady controllable pace. If you want to go left or right, just push in a direction and it will go there. The Disco won’t flip or roll out of control like a standard plane. Even if you lose signal, the Disco will fly back to you just like a DJI drone would.
Removable cameras: In some models, users can remove the cameras and fly the drone without the camera attached, excellent if this is a gift for a beginner who still needs to learn to fly. This helps to reduce the weight of the drone, thus enabling longer flights. More importantly, this feature enables camera upgrades when there are advances in the technology. Perhaps your gift to mom or dad next year will be just such an upgrade.
